Drawn to Life: volume one

This book is the first of two that basically take you through a masters class in Disney animation. I started reading through this book the other day as a reminder of the simpler things in character art. There is a lot of great insight and helpful tips to keep your sketching fresh and energized when doing storyboard and character poses. The main source of information is provided by Walt Stanchfield who was the key animator and story teller for Disney.

I just started working out some sketches based on their provided lessons. I will post them here as the sketches progress.

Testing new Brushes update on iPad

Some really cool new features were introduced with the newest update of Brushes on the iPad. Steve Sprang has added a half dozen new brushes and new layers options.

The new brushes in the brush pallet are a huge leap forward and keep this app up to speed with the competition. I am a big fan of the new foliage and watercolor brush templates.  The new layer option to rotate and transforms really opens up the door to tweaking existing brushes.  for example I have been using a dry brush set to the largest size (100px I think) then using the layer rotate and zoom to enlarge it to create a monstrous single brush stroke to create a quick and believable rain effect. I will post more examples soon.

The new Brushes for iPad app has a few new great features. The most important one to me at this point is the use of layer blend modes. Brushes for iPad now includes overlay, multiply, screen, color and normal layer settings. I used a combination of overlay and color to create a watercolor effect on the tall grass and flowers.

Scare Bear sketched on iPad w/ Brushes app

This is a quick sketch of a zombie teddy bear i did this week. I think i am going to have to redefine 'quick sketch' soon. When sketching on the iPad this week I realized that with the larger screen size, everything illustration wise takes a little bit longer then it did on my iPhone.

First iPad drawing with Sketchbook Pro

This was sketched out with the new Sketchbook Pro from autodesk. i am still getting used to the features and the screen size. sketching on the iphone for the past 18 months has been great, but now i see just how crazy it was to sketch on the tiny 3in. screen.

Sketchbot Custom Show

Saturday was also awesome because I was able to win a Sketchbot figure via twitter by posting this image.

Which is a video from the Sketchbot custom show in NY.

my iPad

sorry for being so late. the doorbell rang at 7:55 saturday morning and the UPS guy was there with my iPad. I think i had to have been one of the first in the area. I posted this on flickr and in 5 minutes got a ga-zillion hits/views.

I immediately downloaded Sketchbook Pro, Brushes and MiniGoreHD form the app store. No regrets.
